In our culture when someone does something that is worthy of praise, we may say that this person deserves a gold star for whatever it is that they have done. The notion of a gold star harkens back to elementary school when teachers would put stickers of gold stars on a pupil's paper to let that pupil know that he or she had done a good job. This academic seal of approval was immediately recognizable. If you saw a gold star on your paper, you knew that you had earned kudos from your teacher.

In India, it is not children that are being rewarded with gold, but their mothers. And when we say gold we are not talking about some little gold sticker. We are talking about real gold—the precious metal. Gold is worth quite a lot these days.

Although we do not seem to have a lot of official policies regarding names in the United States, other countries enact policies or try to encourage people to give their children names that are in line with that country's cultural heritage.

Mothers of newborns in Bengal can get a gold ring if they give their child a traditional name. The gold rings that they receive are made with one gram of gold. There is a panel who meets about every two weeks to go over the names of recently born babies to decide which mothers will get a gold ring for adhering to tradition.

So far officials consider this program to be a success--more than 250 women have been given gold rings. No doubt the lure of gold may have swayed some mothers from choosing non-traditional names. Although it is quite possible that all of the women who were given gold rings as a reward had already determined to give their children a name that reflects traditional values, regardless of the program.
