Gold Gets Stronger When Heated

Gold is definitely a unique metal that quite often defies convention. How else could it be mixed with other metals and produce alloys of varied color? How else could the same metal that you wear as jewelry and adornment also be used as a dental filling? When it comes to what can be done with gold and the properties of this versatile metal, we have not finished learning all that we can about gold. Since ancient times, human beings have been fascinated by gold and there is still a lot more that we can do with it.

New research conducted by scientists at the University of Toronto has shown that gold actually gets harder when it is heated. This goes against common logic, since it would seem that gold, like many other things, would get softer when it is heated. But no, it actually gets harder, which means that gold gets stronger, not weaker when it is heated.
The bonds between the atoms in the gold became much stronger after being heated at these very high temperatures. Putting gold through the fire does not diminish it at all. There had been theories that the bonds in gold would act in this way when heated at extreme temperatures, but these theories really had not been tested in this fashion before now.

The scientists at the University of Toronto heated gold at super-high temperatures, temperatures that exceeded a billion degrees per second. The heat at temperatures this high is close to the temperature on the inside of a star. We cannot even begin to imagine just how hot that is (nor would we want to really).

Does this mean that you should experiment with heating gold at home? Certainly not! As these experiments prove, sometimes gold really can be too hot to handle. We just hope this gives you a little more appreciation for the quality and uniqueness of gold. This research points to just one of the many reasons why gold is so very valuable. And if you would like to harness some of the value of gold, you can sell gold, rather than attempt to heat it to see if it will become stronger. When you sell your gold to a gold buyer, it will strengthen your finances since selling gold can bring in cash for gold.
