Gold Nanowires Used to Fight Cancer
Gold and gold nanoparticles are the continuous subjects of scientific research because scientists have found that gold is useful in so many ways.
One of science's latest findings is that gold nanowires may prove useful in combating cancer. Researchers at the University of Idaho have been experimenting with making gold nanowires that can navigate the bloodstream to reach cancer cells. Once the gold nanowire reaches the cancerous cells, the gold nanowire can be heated using an electromagnetic field and in this way the cancerous cells are destroyed.
Research continues and this method of combating cancer as not yet been perfected. In fact, there are other scientists who are working on a faster application of the same principles using gold-bearing nanotubes.
One reason that medicine and science are especially excited by the possibilities offered by this research with gold nanowire and gold-bearing nanotubes is that it could provide a way to fight cancer while containing damage to healthy cells.
It is amazing to think that these extremely tall particles of gold could be formed into something that could combat something that is so dangerous and heartbreaking as cancer.
